Dr. Luisa Hernandez Medellin

My journey in the field of psychology began in Mexico City, where I started my undergraduate studies in General Psychology at the Jesuit Iberoamerican University in 2003. During my clinical training, I provided psychological services to at-risk children, adolescents, and older adults in underserved urban neighborhoods under the guidance of experienced clinical psychologists. I also coordinated volunteer services at the Federico Gómez Children's General Hospital and was actively involved in community outreach and volunteering with organizations such as the Jesuit Youth Volunteer Service, SOS Villages, and the Society of St. Teresa of Jesus Mission across Mexico, Cuba, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Costa Rica.
These early experiences solidified my commitment to the field of psychology.
In 2004, I relocated to Miami, Florida, where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Carlos Albizu University in 2009. I continued my academic journey by completing a Master of Science in General Psychology in 2010 and, later, a doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 2016 at the same university. Throughout graduate school, I received extensive clinical training at prestigious institutions, including the Goodman Psychological Services Center, the Neurobehavioral Institute of Miami, The Village South/Adolescent Treatment Program, and the Outpatient Pediatric Neuropsychology Program at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
My predoctoral internship at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine/Jackson Memorial Hospital in Pediatric Neuropsychology and my two-year postdoctoral residency in Pediatric Behavioral Health and Pediatric Neuropsychology further deepened my understanding of neurodevelopmental disorders, brain injuries, and how medical conditions impact a child's life.
As an attending Pediatric Neuropsychologist and Pediatric Rehabilitation Psychologist, I provided neuropsychological and behavioral health services at Holtz Children's Hospital, Ryder Trauma Center, and Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital. This diverse training equipped me to offer comprehensive neuropsychological assessments and recommendations for various pediatric neurological conditions, alongside treatments such as cognitive retraining, behavioral interventions, and parenting skills. Additionally, I am trained in play therapy and the assessment of Autism Spectrum Disorders using tools like the ADOS-2, ADI-R, and MIGAS-2.
Beyond my clinical work, I have contributed to the field through numerous poster presentations at national and international conferences, including NAN, INS, and APA. These presentations, based on a major research project analyzing Neuropsychological Profiles of Neurodevelopmental Conditions in Pediatric Populations from 2014 to 2019, reflect my ongoing research in neuropsychology. My areas of interest include the neuropsychological assessment of bilingual pediatric populations (English/Spanish), ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorders across the lifespan, the long-term cognitive and behavioral effects of premature birth, pediatric traumatic brain injury, and the neurobiology of attachment.
I remain actively involved in the psychology community. I am a member of the National Academy of Neuropsychology, the American Psychological Association (APA), including its Division 40: Society for Clinical Neuropsychology and Division 54: Society of Pediatric Psychology, and the International Honor Society in Psychology (Psi Chi). I currently serve on the Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee of the American Academy of Pediatric Neuropsychology and am a peer reviewer for the Journal of Pediatric Neuropsychology. Additionally, I am a candidate for Board Certification in Clinical Neuropsychology through the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) and hold Perinatal Mental Health Certification through Postpartum Support International.
I founded Advanced Neurobehavioral Health, Inc. to provide neuropsychological and behavioral health services to children, adolescents, and their families in the South Florida community. I also serve as a pediatric psychology consultant for the Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist Health South Florida. With extensive experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams—including physical, occupational, speech, recreational, and ABA therapists, as well as medical professionals like physiatrists, psychiatrists, oncologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, pediatricians, nurses, social workers, and case managers
—I ensure a holistic approach to patient care. This collaboration reassures families of my commitment to comprehensive treatment. I am also skilled in working with the public school system and higher education institutions, helping to make recommendations for accommodations and services to facilitate academic success.
In addition to neuropsychological assessments, I utilize evidence-based treatment modalities such as CBT, ACT, behavioral interventions, cognitive rehabilitation, and parenting skills training to address the emotional and behavioral challenges associated with neurodevelopmental disorders, brain injuries, pediatric cancer, and other medical conditions affecting the nervous system.
